Bush struggles for support at Latin America summit: President
George W. Bush struggled to persuade leaders across the Americas
to back his economic, trade and security agenda at a summit on
Tuesday but faced skepticism as many edge away from U.S.
policies. Bush called on Latin American leaders to embrace market
reforms, greater democracy and quick progress on a contentious
Americas-wide free trade deal. "Over the long-term, trade is the
most certain path to lasting prosperity," he said. -- Reuters
Denktash approves new Turkish Cypriot Cabinet: Turkish Cypriot
leader Rauf Denktash on Tuesday approved a new coalition
government for the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state that has
promised to work toward reunification of the divided island
before a May 1 deadline. The new prime minister will be Mehmet
Ali Talat, a leader who staunchly campaigned for the resumption
of reunification talks along a United Nations-backed plan. Serdar
Denktash, son of Rauf Denktash and leader of a party which
previously opposed the plan, will serve as deputy premier and
foreign minister. -- AP
