BBPOM Mataram Seizes Illegal Cosmetics and Hard Drugs in Lombok

The Balai Besar Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (BBPOM) in Mataram is tightening surveillance on the circulation of hazardous products across Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). In its latest operation, the supervisory authority found that unlabelled skin-whitening creams and illegal cosmetic packages dominated the risky product discoveries in the region.

Head of BBPOM Mataram, Yogi Abaso, revealed that the seized products lacked official distribution permits and did not meet safety requirements. This is considered highly risky for the long-term health of consumers’ skin and bodies.

The illegal cosmetic findings were concentrated in the districts of East Lombok and West Lombok. Meanwhile, the circulation of illegal drugs such as alprazolam, tramadol, and heximer was found to be more widespread, covering Central Lombok, East Lombok, West Lombok, and the city of Mataram.

Yogi stressed that the circulation of illegal drugs poses a serious threat. The use of hard drugs without medical supervision can cause dangerous side effects and the risk of dependency. “We continue to conduct consistent monitoring and enforcement because this concerns public safety,” he asserted in Mataram on Wednesday (17/6).

As a preventive measure, BBPOM Mataram is urging the public to become smart consumers by applying the ‘Cek KLIK’ principle before purchasing medicinal or cosmetic products. BBPOM also expects active public participation in reporting any suspicious production or distribution activities in their neighbourhoods. Synergy between the government and citizens is the main key to eradicating the circulation of illegal goods in NTB.
