The Jakarta Food and Drug Administration (BBPOM DKI) has strategically planned surveillance of iftar takeaway (takjil) vendors across designated locations in each Jakarta region during Ramadan. According to Sofiyani Chandrawati, Head of BBPOM DKI, the monitoring spans Jakarta West along Jalan Panjang, Jakarta North in Koja, Jakarta South in Karet, and two locations in Jakarta Central at Bendungan Hilir and Kemayoran. These locations represent major takjil distribution hubs, with Bendungan Hilir identified as a significant iftar food centre.

When harmful substances such as formalin or textile dyes are detected in takjil products, BBPOM DKI immediately secures the food items and investigates the distribution chain. The agency’s primary objective is to interrupt distribution networks and provide consumer education on safe food selection. Sofiyani explained that products are removed from display at retail points, while further investigations identify the producers.

Should producers be located outside Jakarta, such as in Tangerang or Bogor, BBPOM DKI coordinates with the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) in the respective region. The agency also takes enforcement action when necessary. In 2024, a tofu producer was referred for legal investigation after repeatedly violating regulations despite previous guidance and sanctions.

According to surveillance data from takjil centres and modern retail outlets in 2025, BBPOM DKI tested 147 food samples. Six samples (4.1 per cent) failed to meet safety standards, whilst 141 samples (95.9 per cent) met requirements for safe consumption. The non-compliant samples primarily involved tofu products and Rhodamine B colouring, a textile dye.
