BB TNBTS: 162 Climbing Groups Affected by Mount Semeru Closure

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (BB TNBTS) has stated that 162 climbing groups, consisting of 1,217 Indonesian citizens and 18 foreign nationals, have been affected by the policy to totally close the Mount Semeru climbing routes in East Java following forest fires in the Ranu Kembang Block.

“The affected parties include 162 groups, namely 1,217 Indonesian citizens and 18 foreign nationals,” said BB TNBTS Public Relations Officer Endrip Wahyutama, confirmed via WhatsApp from Malang on Sunday.

The total closure of Mount Semeru climbing routes was implemented by BB TNBTS on 26 August 2026, for an indefinite period.

The national park authority has opened services for rescheduling or ticket refunds for every affected climber in accordance with the applicable mechanisms.

According to regulations posted via the official BB TNBTS Instagram account on 28 August 2026, refunds will be processed in full and transferred directly to the visitors’ bank accounts.

Meanwhile, the rescheduling process for the public is guaranteed to be free of charge, with the offered period running from 15 September to 30 November 2026.

BB TNBTS also stated that climbing groups are no longer permitted to replace the names of original members with others.

The estimated processing time for refunds ranges from 3 to 14 working days after data verification. The deadline for submitting refund and reschedule application forms is 11 September 2026.

“No one has filled out the form (for rescheduling and refunds) yet,” he added.
