BAZNAS Sets Zakat al-Fitr for 2026: How to Calculate It
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The National Zakat Endowment Agency (BAZNAS) has set the amount of Zakat al-Fitr for Ramadan 1447 Hijriah, or the year 2026, at Rp50,000 per person. The value is equivalent to 2.5 kilograms or around 3.5 litres of premium rice per person. The determination was made through an official BAZNAS decision cited on its official site on Friday (6 March 2026), taking into account prevailing rice prices. The move provides clear guidance for Muslims in fulfilling the Zakat al-Fitr obligation ahead of Eid al-Fitr.
Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory for Muslims at the end of Ramadan. This act is not only a purification after fasting but also a means of sharing with the community in need so that they can celebrate Eid.
In addition to Zakat al-Fitr, BAZNAS also sets fidyah for those unable to observe fasting on religious grounds. According to Chairman of BAZNAS RI Decree No. 14 of 2026, the fidyah is Rp65,000 per person per day.
How to calculate Zakat al-Fitr
The calculation is based on the number of dependents; Each Muslim who is able is obliged to pay zakat for themselves and their dependents. Example: if a family consists of four people: the head of the family, wife, and two children; calculation: 4 x Rp50,000 = Rp200,000; The family should pay Rp200,000.
Timing: Zakat al-Fitr can be paid from the start of Ramadan until just before the Eid prayer. The deadline is before the Eid prayer begins. If paid after the Eid prayer, it is no longer considered Zakat al-Fitr, but charity (sedekah) in general.
Who must pay Zakat al-Fitr: Generally, Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory for every Muslim who has surplus staple food for themselves and their family on the night of Eid.
Conversely, those who truly cannot meet their staple food needs are not obliged to pay and are instead among those who are eligible to receive zakat.
Forms of payment: In practice, Zakat al-Fitr can be paid in two forms. First, in the form of rice, 2.5 kilograms or about 3.5 litres per person. This is the traditional form of paying Zakat al-Fitr. Second, Zakat al-Fitr can also be paid in cash equivalent to the local price of rice. For this year, BAZNAS has set Rp50,000 per person.
BAZNAS urges the public to carry out Zakat al-Fitr through official institutions such as BAZNAS, mosques, or Zakat Collection Units (UPZ) to ensure orderly and targeted distribution.
The distribution of Zakat al-Fitr is expected to assist those in need, so they can celebrate Eid al-Fitr with happiness.
