Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The National Alms Agency (BAZNAS) of Indonesia continues to strengthen its institutional governance through the implementation of a multi-layered, transparent, and accountable oversight system. This strategic move is being undertaken as a form of implementing the mandate of the law to ensure that the management of Zakat (Islamic alms) takes place in accordance with Sharia and applicable legal regulations.

Chairman of BAZNAS RI, Noor Achmad, stated that transparency is the main foundation of the institution in carrying out its mandate from the community. He emphasised that BAZNAS’s operations are not without control, but are supervised by various official authorities.

“BAZNAS, in carrying out its duties, operates within a multi-layered oversight system as stipulated by law, including Sharia supervision, internal audits, external audits, and supervision by relevant authorities,” he said in a written statement on Thursday (February 26, 2026).

Specifically, Noor expressed his appreciation for the statement by the Minister of Religious Affairs regarding the strengthening of BAZNAS’s oversight function. He said that this is in line with BAZNAS’s aspirations at the central and regional levels, as well as the constitutional mandate.

“We appreciate the statement by the Minister because it is in accordance with our expectations and the expectations of the regions, and also in accordance with the mandate of Law No. 23 of 2011 concerning the Management of Zakat, Article 34, Paragraph 1, which states that the Minister carries out guidance and supervision of BAZNAS and LAZ,” he said.

He added that this initiative opens up opportunities for strengthening the institution’s structure in a more comprehensive manner in the future.

“Thus, the Minister may feel the need to form a new body within BAZNAS, namely a Supervisory Board, as exists in the Lembaga Amil Zakat (LAZ - Indonesian Zakat Institutions). So far, based on existing regulations, BAZNAS has only been supervised by the DPR (House of Representatives), the Inspector General of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Public Accounting Firms, and internal supervision. With the input and thoughts from the Minister, in the future, BAZNAS will be even stronger in implementing the principle of 3 Aman (Sharia-compliant, Regulation-compliant, and compliant with the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia),” he emphasised.

Noor explained that BAZNAS is very open to all forms of strengthening oversight in order to ensure that Zakat funds are truly distributed to the intended recipients in a targeted manner. In line with the increasing size of BAZNAS, the formation of a Supervisory Board is very necessary.

“Commitment to transparency and accountability is the main principle of BAZNAS in maintaining the trust of the community. We continue to strive to improve public trust through professional governance for the benefit of the nation,” he concluded.
