The National Zakat Agency (Baznas) of the Republic of Indonesia has launched the 2026 Indonesia-wide Amil Certification Scholarship Programme as an effort to improve the quality and professionalism of human resources (HR) managing zakat in Indonesia.

“Strengthening the capacity of amil is part of the endeavour to ensure that zakat, infak, and sedekah funds are managed professionally. For the enormous potential of zakat to be managed optimally, transparently, and accountably, it is absolutely necessary to have amil who are not only of high integrity but also possess standardised competencies,” said Baznas RI Vice Chairman Zainut Tauhid Sa’adi in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.

Zainut explained that the scholarship programme targets zakat administrators in eight Indonesian provinces, including Bengkulu, Lampung, Bangka Belitung, Bali, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, North Maluku, and Southeast Sulawesi, with a target of 200 participants.

Through the programme, participants will have the opportunity to undergo a competency certification process for three qualification schemes in zakat management free of charge.

He stressed that the importance of standardising amil competencies is also mandated in Law Number 23 of 2011 Article 11 and Presidential Regulation Number 14 of 2014 Article 7, which stipulate that zakat administrators must possess competence in zakat management.

“All financing for the competency certification scholarship programme comes from the support of Baznas RI through the fisabilillah fund scheme,” he said.

He stated that this standardisation of competency is not merely a formality on paper, but proof that an amil possesses adequate knowledge, skills, and attitude, thereby generating greater public trust from both the community and muzaki (zakat payers).

“Our shared hope is that this programme can achieve its objectives, namely aligning the standards of task implementation in the field, ensuring that amil receive professional recognition for their dedication, and maintaining the consistency of these competencies in the long term,” said Zainut Tauhid Sa’adi.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Baznas Professional Certification Institute (LSP), Muhammad Choirin, stated that the Indonesia-wide Amil Certification Scholarship Programme is an effort to maximise the competence, skills, abilities, and dedication of amil so they can develop optimally.

According to him, strengthening amil competency is one of the best investments for the future of national zakat.

“When amil become more professional, dedicated, with integrity, and competent, the national zakat ecosystem will become stronger and more sovereign. Public trust in zakat management institutions will also increase. With this, Indonesia’s zakat potential, which has long been said to be very large, can be increasingly realised and utilised for the welfare of the people,” said Choirin.
