The National Zakat Board (Baznas) of Indonesia distributed zakat fitrah assistance in the form of 5-kilogram rice packages to 80 beneficiaries comprising disabled persons and the economically disadvantaged in Rawa Buaya, Cengkareng, West Jakarta, on Saturday (14 March). The distribution, conducted in partnership with MI Daarusshofa, took place at Rumah Belajar Winsar, a gathering point for the disabled and underprivileged community in the area.

Subhan Cholid, Principal Secretary of Baznas RI, stated that this distribution represents the institution’s responsibility in ensuring the rights of zakat recipients are fulfilled during the sacred month.

“This zakat fitrah distribution is a trust from donors that we prioritise for vulnerable groups, including our disabled brethren. We want to ensure that on Eid, no family has difficulty meeting their basic needs,” said Subhan in a written statement.

Dwi Handayatun, Chairperson of Bina Insani Winsar Foundation, expressed deep gratitude. As a mother raising two disabled children amidst dense settlement frequently affected by flooding, she said Baznas’s presence has been invaluable.

“I am very grateful to Baznas. Honestly, I felt I was struggling alone for years seeking assistance for disabled children here. Since knowing Baznas, I feel embraced. Baznas is truly present within our underprivileged community, not merely formal, but with aid we genuinely benefit from,” said Dwi emotionally.

Dwi added that the rice assistance came at a crucial time given residents’ unstable economic conditions following two floods within the past month. “Most residents here work as scavengers and labourers. Even daily meals are difficult, let alone buying rice after floods. I ensure these 80 rice packages reach those who truly need them,” she added.

Similar sentiments were expressed by Winarni, a mother whose child has intellectual disability. For her, the zakat fitrah rice distribution proves invaluable amid her family’s limited means.

“We are an underprivileged family, living below average. Rice is our daily primary need. After receiving zakat fitrah assistance from Baznas, we are extremely grateful. I hope this continues next year, as it greatly helps our lives. Keep progressing Baznas, do not stop helping people like us,” said Winarni.
