Baznas distributes smart scholarships to 210 students in Jayapura City
The National Amil Zakat Agency (Baznas) of Jayapura City, Papua, has disbursed the first phase of the Jayapura Cerdas Scholarship for 2026 to 210 primary, junior high, and senior high school students in Jayapura City. Jayapura City Baznas Chairman Alwi Tianlean stated on Thursday that the programme aims to help ease the economic burden on parents while ensuring students can continue their education without being hindered by school costs. “A total of 210 beneficiaries have undergone a selection process so that assistance can be given to high-achieving students from underprivileged families,” he said. According to Alwi, the education sector is one of the priority programmes for Jayapura City Baznas in distributing zakat, infak, and sedekah funds collected from the community. “Therefore, the Jayapura Cerdas Scholarship programme is expected to boost students’ enthusiasm for learning so they can continue to excel and achieve a better future,” he added. He noted that the amount of assistance provided varies from Rp350,000 to Rp600,000 per student to support educational needs for one semester. He added that his agency remains committed to expanding the benefits of zakat, infak, and sedekah through various social, education, health, and community economic empowerment programmes to improve the welfare of local residents. Meanwhile, Jayapura Deputy Mayor Rustan Sahru said that the education assistance distributed through Baznas represents a form of concern for improving the quality of human resources from school age.
