Travellers heading towards Magelang or the central route can now exit directly at Ambarawa without leaving the toll road, according to Moch Iqbal Tamher, Head of the Central Java-DIY Road Development Authority (BBPJN Jateng-DIY), when contacted in Semarang on Monday.

The activation of the Bawen-Yogyakarta toll road with the Ambarawa exit will ease vehicle congestion that has frequently occurred at Bawen intersection, which serves as the meeting point for traffic flows towards Magelang and the central route.

Previously, Bawen intersection—serving as the exit point of the Bawen toll road—became a convergence point for holiday travellers, frequently causing traffic congestion.

However, for the overall progress of the Bawen-Yogyakarta toll road, particularly the Magelang segment through Sections 4 and 5 in the Magelang to Jambu area, additional time will be required. The official attributed the slower pace to the challenging geographical conditions in the mountainous region.

The completion of the Bawen-Yogyakarta toll road, particularly in the Magelang segment towards Sections 4 and 5 covering the Magelang to Jambu area, remains on schedule for 2028 or 2029 due to the mountainous terrain.
