Battery Investment Becomes the Engine of Downstreaming
The development of electric vehicles (EVs) is beginning to drive significant investment in the battery sector. The Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM recorded that investment in the nickel sector in the first half of 2026 reached Rp71 trillion. Of this amount, more than Rp50 trillion, or around 70%, went into the development of the electric vehicle battery ecosystem. Director of Downstreaming Strategy and Governance at the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM Ahmad Faizal Suralaga said that the high level of battery investment indicates a shift in the direction of Indonesia’s nickel downstreaming.
