The Batang Toru Hydropower Plant carries a range of hopes for communities in the surrounding area.

South Tapanuli, North Sumatra (ANTARA) — The soft rush of the Batang Toru River accompanied the journey to the main dam of the hydropower plant in Sipirok District, South Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, on the second weekend of October.

Dense trees lined the roadside, like an army surrounding and guarding the edge of the dam.

The distinctive scent of earth and rain-soaked leaves greeted visitors arriving to see the progress of the 510-megawatt (MW) hydropower project. Although Indonesia is experiencing the El Niño phenomenon, rain has regularly fallen across South Tapanuli since early September.

The government sees the water potential of the Batang Toru River in northern Sumatra as a potential boon for the surrounding communities.

Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot said the Batang Toru Hydropower Plant could become a pillar of energy security and electricity supply stability for the region.

“This [Batang Toru Hydropower Plant] is part of our efforts to strengthen national energy security and reliability. Of course, it is also part of Astacita,” Yuliot said during a visit to the plant’s water dam in South Tapanuli, North Sumatra, on Friday (9 October).

His visit also marked the start of the Batang Toru project’s reservoir-filling stage. The step is intended to accelerate the project so it can support the reliability of the northern Sumatra electricity system ahead of the 2026 Christmas and 2027 New Year period.
