Batang SEZ Not Only Pursuing Investment, but Also Restoring Coastal Ecosystems
The development of industrial zones is no longer solely focused on investment and manufacturing growth. In Batang, Central Java, the management of the industrial estate is being integrated with efforts to organise marine spaces, restore coastal ecosystems, and empower coastal communities.
PT Kawasan Industri Terpadu Batang (KITB), a member of the state-owned holding company Danareksa, together with the Directorate General of Marine Spatial Planning at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), signed a cooperation agreement on coastal management and the utilisation of water areas in the Batang region on Friday (5/6/2026).
The agreement was signed by the Director General of Marine Spatial Planning at KKP, Kartika Listriana, and the Acting President Director of KITB, Indri Septa Respati, and witnessed by the President Director of Holding BUMN Danareksa, Ngurah Wirawan.
President Director of Holding BUMN Danareksa, Ngurah Wirawan, stated that industrial estate development must go hand in hand with efforts to maintain environmental sustainability, including coastal and marine areas.
“A good industrial estate should actually help protect its coastline, its marine ecosystems, and the surrounding coastal communities. Our role as a holding company is to be an orchestrator that brings together expertise and resources, so that each party can play its part,” said Ngurah in a statement on Friday (5/6/2026).
Through this cooperation, KKP and KITB will implement a number of programmes covering marine spatial planning, rehabilitation and restoration of coastal ecosystems, strengthening human resource capacity, and disseminating policies to the community and stakeholders.
One focus to be developed is blue carbon management through the conservation of coastal ecosystems such as mangroves. In addition to functioning to absorb and store carbon, mangrove ecosystems also play a role in protecting coastal areas from abrasion and the impacts of climate change.
This cooperation is a follow-up to a memorandum of understanding between KKP and PT Danareksa (Persero), which was signed in July 2025.
The initiative is also aligned with the transformation of Holding BUMN Danareksa in managing national industrial estates in an integrated manner through the Indonesia Industrial Estate programme. Danareksa currently manages seven industrial estates with a total area of 7,800 hectares, accommodating more than 1,600 tenants from 25 countries, and absorbing around 300,000 workers.
KITB has been designated as the Batang Industropolis Special Economic Zone (SEZ) through Government Regulation Number 12 of 2025. The zone is one of the new industrial development centres expected to drive economic growth while maintaining environmental sustainability.
Ngurah expressed hope that the collaborative model between industrial development and coastal environmental management in Batang can be applied in other industrial estates across Indonesia.
“We invite all stakeholders to jointly realise development that is in harmony with conservation in Batang, so that this model can be replicated in other areas, thereby providing broader benefits for the economy and society,” said Ngurah.
