Batam women and child protection unit handles 44 violence cases
Batam — The Regional Technical Unit for Women and Child Protection (UPTD PPA) in Batam, Riau Islands, handled 44 cases of violence against women and children between January and February 2026.
According to Suratin, Acting Head of UPTD PPA Batam, the majority of cases handled involved sexual violence, particularly against children.
“In total, 44 cases have been reported through February 2026. Of these, the most prevalent is sexual violence with 36 cases,” said Suratin when contacted in Batam on Wednesday.
In January 2026, UPTD PPA Batam received 30 reports comprising two female victims and 28 child victims.
“Of the 28 cases of violence against children, 25 involved sexual violence, two were related to child custody disputes, and one involved physical assault. For violence against women, there were two cases — one domestic violence case and one sexual violence case,” he explained.
Entering February 2026, reports reached 14 cases comprising six female victims and eight child victims.
All child violence cases in that month constituted sexual violence.
Among female victims, there were two sexual violence cases, two child custody dispute cases, one domestic violence case, and one psychological violence case.
“We provide forensic examinations for victims as evidence in court proceedings. To date, we have recorded 24 forensic examinations conducted for children and women,” he said.
He noted that the support process can extend considerably, sometimes lasting six months or more until the case is decided in court.
“Our services are not like visiting a doctor who prescribes medicine and sends you on your way. At UPTD PPA, we provide comprehensive support, including forensic examinations and accompaniment throughout the judicial process,” he explained.
Additionally, UPTD PPA Batam offers consultation services for members of the public seeking support before deciding whether to pursue cases through legal channels or resolve them through counselling.
“Some people come only for consultation or support services to determine whether their case needs to proceed legally or can be handled sufficiently by UPTD PPA Batam. Cases vary widely,” said Suratin.
Suratin urged the public not to hesitate in reporting any form of violence against women and children so that cases can be addressed promptly and perpetrators can face legal sanctions.
