Survivor discovered in engine room after dramatic multi-agency rescue off Tanjung Uncang

A rare survival story emerged from Batam waters after a tugboat crew member was found alive inside an overturned vessel, ending a tense three-day search operation on an extraordinary note.

Capsized Tugboat Off Tanjung Uncang

The incident involved tugboat TB ASL Mega, which capsized near PT ASL Shipyard Indonesia in Tanjung Uncang, Batam, on March 6, 2026, according to multiple local reports. Early reporting said five crew members were on board, with three confirmed dead, one rescued earlier, and one still missing as the search entered its final phase.

Survivor Found In Engine Room

On the third day of the operation, search teams resumed work at around 4:30 a.m. and focused on the interior of the overturned hull. Around 5:10 a.m. on March 8, the missing crew member, identified in local reports as Yusuf Tangkil, was found alive in the engine room by divers involved in the operation.

Rescuers believe he survived because of an air pocket inside the vessel, which may have allowed continued access to oxygen while the boat remained upside down. He was evacuated and taken to Mutiara Aini Hospital in Batam for intensive medical treatment.

Search Operation Involved Multiple Agencies

The rescue effort involved a joint SAR team that included Basarnas, police, military-linked responders, port and maritime elements, and company personnel. Earlier updates from the search operation said teams also used diving and thermal-drone support while sweeping the wreck area for the final missing victim.

After the final survivor was recovered, authorities said the SAR mission was completed and participating units returned to their respective commands.

Final Casualty Count

With Yusuf found alive, all five people from the incident were accounted for. Reports state that two crew members survived and three died in the capsizing. The three fatalities had already been recovered and later handed over to their families.

A Rare Maritime Survival Story

The rescue quickly stood out because surviving for days inside a capsized vessel is highly unusual and depends on a narrow set of conditions, including trapped air and rapid search coordination. In this case, the discovery of a live survivor transformed what had largely been reported as a fatal maritime accident into a remarkable rescue outcome.

The Batam tugboat rescue is a powerful reminder of both the risks faced by maritime workers and the life-saving value of coordinated emergency response. For Indonesians, the case highlights the importance of workplace and marine safety in busy industrial waters like Batam. For Singaporeans, especially given Batam’s close economic and shipping links with Singapore, the incident also underscores how maritime accidents in nearby corridors can carry immediate human and operational significance across the SIJORI region.
