Batam remains tense

BATAM, Riau: The security situation in Sekupang, Batam Island, remained tense on Monday, following riots that erupted on Sunday.

Antara reported that police continued patrolling the area in anticipation of further unrest.

A mob ran amok on Sunday venting anger on public transportation drivers after a resident of Kampung Baru, identified as SL, was severely injured after being beaten by a public vehicle driver, said to be a Sumatra native.

Witnesses said the mob stopped passing taxis and interrogated drivers, asking where they were from. Those claiming to be from Sumatra were immediately attacked.

Public transportation remain disrupted on Monday due to fear of further reprisals. (emf)
