Batam Meat Prices Rise Ahead of Ramadan and Eid
Disperindag says supply tight but prices remain under control Meat prices in Batam have begun climbing ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, with beef showing the sharpest increase as demand builds across the city. Beef Prices Climb Before Festive Season The Batam Industry and Trade Office confirmed that beef prices have started rising in the lead-up to Ramadan and Eid. Wahyu Daryatin, Head of Trade at Disperindag Batam, said seasonal increases are common during this period due to higher demand. Frozen beef prices have jumped from around Rp80,000 to Rp90,000 per kilogram previously to above Rp110,000 per kilogram approximately SGD 8.80 per kilogram. Fresh beef prices are even higher, reaching up to Rp150,000 per kilogram, or approximately SGD 12.00. Heavy Dependence on Imported Supply Batam relies heavily on frozen imported beef, largely sourced from Australia and distributed through Jakarta. Limited availability of fresh local beef has made the market more vulnerable to supply chain fluctuations and rising import costs. Wahyu explained that while there is no government-set maximum retail price for beef, authorities monitor reference prices to keep the market stable. He emphasized that despite the increase, prices remain manageable and supply continues to meet demand. Distribution Costs and External Factors The city’s dependence on imports means global price movements and transportation costs directly influence retail prices. Any increase at the import level is quickly reflected in local markets, particularly during peak consumption periods. Officials said distribution logistics from Jakarta also contribute to price adjustments, especially when demand intensifies before major religious holidays. Chicken Prices Remain Stable In contrast to beef, chicken prices have remained relatively stable at around Rp40,000 per kilogram, or approximately SGD 3.20. Supply is considered sufficient, with sources coming from Barelang as well as Medan and Jakarta. Authorities noted that chicken supply and demand are currently balanced and are expected to remain steady through the Eid period. Monitoring Ahead of Eid Disperindag Batam continues to monitor price movements closely to prevent excessive spikes. Seasonal adjustments are expected, but officials aim to ensure affordability for residents preparing for Ramadan and Eid celebrations. Market inspections and coordination with distributors remain ongoing to maintain stable food availability during the festive season. The rise in beef prices ahead of Ramadan reflects Batam’s reliance on imported supply and heightened seasonal demand. As cross-border trade and food logistics between Indonesia and Singapore remain closely linked, stable supply chains and effective monitoring will be essential to maintaining regional food price stability during peak festive periods.
