Batam Land Conflict: Two Killed in Violent Clash at Barelang Bridge III
Police detain six people as long-running land dispute erupts into deadly violence.
A long-running land dispute in Setokok has escalated into one of Batam’s most serious recent security incidents, prompting an intensive police investigation and increased patrols around Barelang.
Two People Killed in Setokok Clash
Two people were killed and several others injured after two groups clashed in Setokok, near Jembatan III Barelang, Batam, on September 14, 2026. Police said the confrontation was connected to a land dispute that had existed for some time. Videos of the violence circulated widely on social media following the incident.
Long-Running Land Dispute Behind Violence
Barelang Police Chief Kombes Pol Anggoro Wicaksono said the dispute involved competing claims over the same area of land. Police had previously carried out mediation efforts involving the conflicting parties, but the disagreement remained unresolved. Anggoro said the violence occurred when one group arrived at the site and the other group, which was managing the land, felt provoked, leading to a confrontation.
Three Suspects Named After Initial Detentions
Police initially detained six people believed to be connected to the clash as investigators examined their respective roles. By September 15, police had named three people as suspects and opened two police reports covering different alleged offenses arising from the violence. Investigators said the case remained under development as they continued collecting evidence and examining the actions of those involved. Anggoro said law enforcement would be carried out firmly, professionally and objectively against anyone proven to have been involved.
Police Investigate Weapons and Cause of Death
Police also responded to reports that firearms had been used during the confrontation. Anggoro said the initial investigation indicated that a compressed-air weapon, rather than a firearm, may have been involved. Authorities were still awaiting medical examinations, including autopsies and forensic findings, to establish the exact causes of death and clarify how the weapons were used.
Police Deny Batam Is Under Siaga 1
Despite messages circulating after the clash, police denied that Batam had been placed under Siaga 1 security status. Anggoro also stressed that the incident was related to a land dispute and was not connected to ethnicity, religion, race or intergroup issues. Joint security personnel from Polresta Barelang, Polda Kepri and the military were deployed around the area, while patrols were increased and residents were urged not to spread unverified information.
The deadly Setokok clash shows the serious consequences that unresolved land disputes can have for communities in Batam. For Indonesians, authorities are continuing the legal investigation while maintaining security around the affected area. Singaporeans traveling to or conducting activities in Batam can also follow official police information while the investigation and heightened patrols continue.
