Batam jobs only for single women

MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: The provincial government will
send 600 young, unmarried female job seekers to work with
companies on rapidly growing Batam Island this year.

To achieve the target, the local government has decided to
dispatch 100 job seekers this month, chief of the local office of
manpower Sukirno said yesterday.

Sukirno said the job opportunities were closed to widows and
divorcees on the grounds that they might tell the young unmarried
women about their marital experiences, "which could have a
negative impact".

The job seekers are required to participate in vocational
training courses in western Lombok before going to Batam. Among
the companies planning to employ the women are PT Vatra Battery,
a Singaporean electronics firm, and PT Simano, a Japanese bicycle
assembling plant.

The workers will be accommodated in dormitories, he said as
quoted by Antara. (pan)
