The Batam City Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting technology-based investment. One form of this support was the attendance of Batam Mayor Amsakar Achmad and Deputy Mayor Li Claudia Chandra at the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PJBTL) between PT PLN Batam and PT Altiva Identity Data Center at the Tanjung Kasam Auditorium, PLN Batam Office, on Tuesday, 28 July 2026.

Mayor Amsakar considered PT Altiva Identity Data Center’s decision to invest in Batam to be the right move. Beyond its strategic position on the international shipping route of the Malacca Strait and its direct border with Singapore, Batam also enjoys regulatory support from the central government that further strengthens its investment appeal.

Batam, he said, is currently transforming from a conventional manufacturing industrial zone into a centre for information technology investment and data centres. “What has been done today proves that synergy among stakeholders can enhance investment competitiveness. Collaboration like this is important so that Batam grows ever stronger as an investment locomotive and a driver of national economic growth,” said Amsakar.

According to him, the direction of investment in Batam has shifted significantly. Whereas it was previously dominated by the infrastructure and assembly manufacturing sectors, investment is now moving towards the information technology sector, including the rapidly growing data centre industry. In view of this trend, the Batam City Government, together with BP Batam, is committed to ensuring the readiness of supporting infrastructure, particularly the availability of electricity and clean water supplies, which are the primary needs of the technology industry.

“Data centres can flourish in Batam as long as electricity and clean water needs are met. Today’s PJBTL signing demonstrates the readiness of the electricity supply, whilst the Batam City Government will continue to accelerate and simplify the licensing process for investors,” he said.

Amsakar noted that global attention towards Batam as a technology investment destination is increasing. This is evident, among other things, from the planned partnership investment by Firmus Technologies of Australia together with Nvidia to develop GPU production facilities in Batam, targeted to begin operations in the first quarter of 2027. Amsakar also called on all elements of society and stakeholders to safeguard the investment climate by building a positive narrative about Batam as a safe, conducive, and investment-friendly region.

According to him, various macroeconomic indicators show Batam’s continuously strengthening performance. Batam’s Human Development Index (HDI) has reached 83.8, the highest in Riau Islands Province and among the top five in Sumatra. This achievement reflects the improving quality of education, health, and public welfare.

Meanwhile, the manufacturing sector remains the main pillar of Batam’s economy, contributing around 52–56 per cent of Batam City’s Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). Its contribution to the economy of Riau Islands Province reaches 62–68 per cent.

“These various achievements show that Batam’s development is on the right track. Let us unite our resolve and strengthen collaboration so that Batam becomes more advanced, competitive, and prosperous,” said Amsakar.
