Batam customs seize luxury cars from S'pore

The Batam customs authorities have confiscated tens of used luxury cars shipped from nearby Singapore for failing to have legal documents.

Those cars were sealed with white papers reading "Customs" at the Batu Ampar port, Antara reported on Sunday.

The cars were then parked inside a building near the port.

Batam Mayor Nyat Kadir issued regulations last April banning the importation of used cars.

Under the regulations, all imported used cars must be returned to their country of origin.

The news agency, however, said that six of the sealed cars, including a Honda CRV and Toyota Altis, were moved from the parking lot with an escort of security personnel.

Tailing the entourage, an Antara reporter observed that the cars were moved to a parking lot at a house in the Rosedale housing complex in Central Batam.

The chief of the Batam, Rempang and Galang islands (Barelang) Police, Comr. Suhartono, was not available for comment.

The police previously seized 22 used luxury cars illegally imported from Singapore. -- JP
