Batam clash averted in eviction

INDONESIA: A crowd of about 100 people nearly clashed with
officials trying to evict street vendors as part of a seven day
clean-up campaign in Batam, Riau.

Military commander Lt. Col. Edy Rahmayadi said the crowd tried
to stop the eviction but the presence of the military deterred
them. The crowd then burned tires and piles of wood. No arrests
