Batam authority probes Rp 1b bribe

BATAM, Riau: The Batam authority said on Tuesday it was still investigating allegations of a Rp 1 billion bribe pocketed by one of its officials from a businessman to help him acquire 50,000 square meters of land in the Batam Center area.

Priyanto, who has been tasked with investigating the case, said he was trying hard to gather data and information on the allegations against the official, identified only as Nn.

Priyanto, who is also a deputy chief of the Batam administration's supervision and control bureau, said that so far no other officials were suspected of being involved in the case.

He said the businessman, identified as Hs from PT CIP, had been questioned over the bribery allegation.

Meanwhile, PT CIP has urged the local prosecutor's office to look into the case.

"The Batam prosecutor's office has been asked to investigate the case as it involves corruption. Civil servants are not allowed to take bribes," said a PT CIP officer. --Antara
