Basofi Calls For No Malls in Madura
TEMPO Interactive, Surabaya:East Java’s former governor Basofi Sudirman has requested that no shopping centers be constructed in Madura Island after the launch of the Suramadu Bridge.
“Malls would put traditional markets out of business,” Basofi said, attending the declaration of the East Java Community Coalition yesterday.
According to Basofi, Madura must be different from other regions where many malls can be found. “We must protect the economic interests of the Madurese.”
He also said the Suramadu Bridge must bring benefits to the community.
Basofi said a suitable program to develop Madura’s economic potential is cattle breeding. “Madura has long been known as great cattle breeding area,” he said.
