Basketball coach stabbed to death

MANILA (AFP): Rogelio Melencio, basketball coach of the
Philippine national team, was slain by knife-wielding assailants
here, police said yesterday.

Melencio, 62, who at once coached Kuwait's national team, was
attacked inside a pub here along with a friend who was wounded,
police spokesmen told AFP.

The official Philippine News Agency said two soldiers -- a
marine and a navyman -- were subsequently arrested in the
stabbing, but this could not be independently confirmed.
