Basic and Secondary Education Minister: English to become a compulsory subject for primary school students in 2027
Starting in 2027, English will become a compulsory subject for third-grade students in primary schools.
The Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu’ti, made this announcement during the inauguration of the Revitalisation of Education Programme at State Vocational High School 1 Sikur in East Lombok on Sunday.
He stated that the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education is currently preparing various supporting aspects to ensure the successful implementation of this policy.
A key step being taken is the provision of English language training for primary school teachers.
Mendikdasmen explained that this policy is part of the ministry’s efforts to improve the quality of education and equip students with 21st-century skills from an early age.
“With earlier proficiency in English, Indonesian students are expected to be able to compete on the global stage,” said Mendikdasmen Abdul Mu’ti.
“The training will be provided gradually to primary school teachers throughout Indonesia,” added Mendikdasmen Abdul Mu’ti.
He emphasised that revitalisation and digitalisation are not the ultimate goals, but rather efforts to improve the quality of educational services.
“Therefore, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education is also focusing on improving the qualifications and competencies of teachers,” said Mendikdasmen Abdul Mu’ti.
