Basarnas Vessel Catches Fire During Maintenance at Muara Baru Dock

A vessel caught fire at Muara Baru, Penjaringan, North Jakarta. The burning ship has been confirmed as belonging to the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).

Public relations officer for the Jakarta SAR office, Ramli Prasetio, confirmed that the vessel on fire is the KN SAR Ramawijaya 240. The ship caught fire while undergoing annual maintenance or docking at the PT Proskuneo Kadarusman shipyard.

“The ship that caught fire belongs to Basarnas Mentawai, and currently 20 fire engines have been deployed to extinguish the blaze at the location,” said Ramli Prasetio in Jakarta.

According to Ramli, the vessel does not belong to the Jakarta SAR office but to Basarnas Mentawai, which was undergoing annual repairs at a shipyard in the Muara Baru area, North Jakarta. “The firefighting process is currently underway,” Ramli stated.

Meanwhile, Gatot Sulaeman, Head of Operations for the North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Service, said that 14 fire engines and 70 personnel were deployed to the scene to extinguish the fire. “The situation is currently in the cooling phase,” said Gatot.

Gatot added that residents came to report the ship fire directly at 7:58 PM Western Indonesian Time. Officers arrived at the location and began the firefighting process at 8:03 PM. “As of 8:44 PM, the cooling process is still ongoing,” Gatot revealed.

He further stated that officers are still working in the field to gather witness statements to determine the cause of the fire. “We are still collecting information regarding the cause and the estimated losses,” Gatot concluded.
