Basarnas Ship from Mentawai Catches Fire During Repairs at Muara Baru
A ship bearing the Basarnas insignia caught fire while undergoing annual maintenance or docking at PT Proskuneo Kadarusman in the Muara Baru area, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, on Wednesday evening. The vessel that caught fire was KN SAR Ramawijaya 240, the main ship belonging to the Mentawai Search and Rescue Office, according to an official from the North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Sub-Department. The official stated the ship was undergoing docking at PT Proskuneo Kadarusman when it caught fire. Gatot Sulaeman, Head of Operations for the North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Sub-Department, said 14 fire engines and 70 personnel were deployed to extinguish the blaze. He noted that as of 8:44 p.m. Western Indonesian Time, the situation was still in the cooling-down phase. Gatot added that officers were still working at the scene to gather information from witnesses regarding the cause of the fire and to assess the estimated losses.
