Jakarta (ANTARA) - Basarnas has so far recorded one resident in Manado who died due to a 7.6-magnitude earthquake originating from the southeast area of Bitung City, North Sulawesi Province, on Thursday morning.

Spokesperson for the Manado SAR Office, Nuriadin Gumeleng, in a video statement confirmed from Jakarta on Thursday, said the fatality was a woman, DL (70), who died after being crushed by building rubble.

“The victim died after being hit by collapsing building debris and has been evacuated to Bhayangkara Hospital,” he said.

He explained that the earthquake caused damage to several buildings in Manado City, one of which was the local Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) building reported to have collapsed in several sections.

“There is information about two victims who jumped from a building, but we are still investigating,” he said.

Nuriadin stated that following the earthquake, some communities in coastal areas, such as Bitung and Southeast Minahasa, have carried out self-evacuations following information about the potential tsunami.

Nevertheless, community activities in Manado City have generally started to return to normal.

Basarnas has assured that it continues to monitor and conduct data collection in the field to ensure the latest conditions and handling of earthquake-affected victims.
