JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Bareskrim Polri has uncovered the misuse of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Klaten Regency, Central Java. In the bust, police named two individuals as suspects.

Wakabareskrim Polri Irjen Nunung Syaifudin stressed that the misuse of subsidised goods constitutes a serious crime with widespread impacts on society, particularly the lower classes entitled to the subsidies.

“The misuse of subsidised items, in this case LPG or fuel, is not only a betrayal of the state but also a betrayal of the small-scale community that should receive these subsidies,” Nunung stated in his remarks on Saturday (2/5/2026).

“This law enforcement action follows a report from the public that we received and immediately followed up with an investigation,” said Irhamni.

He revealed that in the early hours of 28 April 2026, the investigative team conducted a raid at a warehouse in Wonosari sub-district, Klaten.

From the location, officers secured 1,465 LPG cylinders of various sizes, injection equipment, and six operational vehicles.

According to Irhamni, the perpetrators used a method of transferring the contents of subsidised 3-kilogramme LPG cylinders into non-subsidised 12-kilogramme and 50-kilogramme cylinders, which were then resold at higher prices.

“The gas from subsidised cylinders is transferred to non-subsidised cylinders using certain techniques, then sold at non-subsidised prices to gain profit,” he explained.

From this case bust, Bareskrim estimates it has prevented potential state losses of around Rp 6.7 billion.

“We have succeeded in preventing potential state losses of approximately Rp 6.7 billion,” he asserted.

“We will not stop and will pursue it to the financiers and their networks,” he added firmly.
