Initially, investigators found mercury-containing cosmetics at the homes of witnesses MI and BBT on 24 February 2026. Interrogation revealed that MI and BBT were resellers who obtained the products from a witness initials RA in Depok, West Java. The team confronted the suspect ML, who was with her husband, the witness JN, and explained the evidence relating to the LC Beauty cosmetics previously secured.
From the search, investigators found raw materials, finished products, packaging bottles and jars, production and mixing equipment, labels, packing materials. In addition, ML admitted producing and distributing LC Beauty without a distribution permit from BPOM and containing mercury and hydroquinone, from 2016 to 2019. She paused operations for a time and resumed production since 2022 to present.
The mercury and hydroquinone used in cosmetics were obtained via individual purchases through one of ML’s workers. ML bought mercury and hydroquinone from a market in Jakarta.
As a result, ML was named a suspect and charged under Article 435 on health, with up to 12 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to Rp2 billion. “Tersangka ML has not been detained due to pregnancy of about 2 months and post-operative status.”
