The Criminal Investigation Directorate (Bareskrim) of the Indonesian National Police has thwarted the shipment of 10 cannabis packages from Padang, West Sumatra, to Sidoarjo, East Java. One individual, identified by the initials MAH (28), has been taken into custody.

The discovery followed reports from the public regarding a narcotics shipment travelling from Padang to Sidoarjo on Monday (8/6). Based on this information, a team led by the Head of Sub-directorate IV of the Narcotics Crime Sub-directorate of Bareskrim Polri, Kombes Handik Zusen, and the Head of the NIC Task Force, Kombes Kevin Leleury, ordered Unit V of Sub-directorate IV to investigate.

After coordinating with the expedition company, surveillance was conducted on the shipment destined for an address on Jalan Tlasih Satu, Tulangan District, Sidoarjo Regency, East Java.

“The joint team successfully apprehended the suspect, MAH, along with packages containing clothing and 10 packages of dried cannabis packed in a cardboard box wrapped in a white sack,” stated the Director of Narcotics Crimes of Bareskrim Polri, Brigjen Eko Hadi Santoso, in a statement on Sunday (14/6/2026).

According to the suspect’s testimony, the package belonged to his friend, Kurniawan. The suspect was aware that the contents of the package were cannabis.

The suspect admitted that he had previously accompanied Kurniawan to collect a package from an expedition office in Sidoarjo using a motorcycle belonging to a man named Yusuf. Initially, the suspect claimed he did not know the contents were cannabis.

He was subsequently given a reward of Rp 600,000 for agreeing to accompany the collection. After the items were collected from the expedition office, they were taken directly to Yusuf’s house in Sukodono.

“After it was opened, MAH only then realised that it was cannabis,” he continued.

On 5 June 2026, MAH was telephoned by Kurniawan, who requested a full home address and telephone number. When MAH asked the purpose of the request, Kurniawan replied, ‘There is some fortune for your child.’ At that point, MAH became aware that cannabis was being sent to his address, with a promised payment of Rp 300,000 per kilogram.

The suspect met Kurniawan during a ‘Halal Bihalal Scooterist Sidoarjo’ event at MPP Sidoarjo in 2025. Their friendship continued until Kurniawan invited MAH to his house during the 2026 New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“During that event, Kurniawan offered MAH one cannabis joint to smoke together. Following that event, Kurniawan frequently provided cannabis to MAH for them to smoke together, often at Kurniawan’s house,” Eko Hadi added.

Bareskrim has placed Kurniawan on the most wanted list (DPO).

“A warrant has been issued for Kurniawan, also known as Cemek. Based on identity documents and the TikTok account @achmad.Kurniawan020, which follows a Sidoarjo Vespa community, his real name has been identified as Achmad Sofari Kurniawan,” he concluded.
