Barelang Transmigration Area Begins to Attract Global Investors
The transmigration area developed by the Ministry of Transmigration is now beginning to attract the attention of global investors. One such area is the Batam, Rempang and Galang (Barelang) Transmigration Area in Batam, Riau Islands, which is considered to have significant potential for data centre development.
Minister of Transmigration M. Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara said the area is supported by adequate electricity supply, a strategic location, and strong connectivity with regional industrial and trade centres.
“There is a transmigration area in Batam that is highly potential for data centres. NVIDIA has even entered the area. Why? Because the electricity needs are available and the location is very strategic,” he was quoted as saying on Friday (28/8/2026).
Previously, Iftitah said the area is even projected to bring in investment of up to Rp200 trillion from the construction of a glass factory, as the leading commodity in Rempang is silica sand.
In supporting the development of the Batam, Rempang and Galang (Barelang) Transmigration Area in Batam, Riau Islands, the Ministry of Transmigration is cooperating with BP Batam and the Batam City Government, and reporting progress periodically to the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono.
According to him, conditions there have become increasingly conducive over the past year. This situation is considered an important asset for driving regional development while creating a healthy investment climate.
“This is important for providing a comfortable investment climate for all parties. This is what we will continue to build,” said Iftitah.
He expressed hope that the development of the Batam, Rempang and Galang (Barelang) Transmigration Area in Batam, Riau Islands, will not only drive regional economic growth but also serve as an example of transmigration area management that prioritises dialogue, welfare, and the sustainability of local community livelihoods.
