Barclay's summer collection reflects romantic trend
JAKARTA (JP): Many Indonesian fashion buffs are not familiar
with Betty Barclay's collection, but they will find her items
quite intriguing.
Three trends influence her summer collection.
The color is strongly influenced by the rich coloring and
motifs from traditional African, Caribbean and Asian textiles.
Folklore, journeys to distant lands, the excitement of exotic
beaches and musical rhythms are the main theme behind Barclay's
summer outfits. The use of delicate and cool materials such as
cotton, linen and silk give a summer feel to her pieces.
Tropical Garden is Barclay's collection of long, loose
and flowing chiffon robes combined with sleeveless blouses and
wide, flowery pants. Very appropriate for a summer holiday.
The romantic trend dominates almost all her collections.
Inspired by Jane Campion's dark and gloomy love story, The Piano,
which is set against an early l9th century backdrop, Barclay's
collections exploit feminine style. This theme reflects a
yearning for traditional values and women's sensuality. Fabrics
are soft but firm, like transparent lace, chiffon and tulle with
floral and natural motifs. Colors are reminiscent of graying
pastels or powdery shades of rose, pale blue and sunshine yellow.
Betty Barclay also favors short dresses. Baby-doll designs and
pinafores are substantial. High-waists, smocking and pleats are
combined with layered skirts and lace to emphasize femininity.
Summer Dreams is the theme for Barclay's flowery dresses made
of soft materials like georgette, viscose, chiffon and silk. The
dresses have a simple cut and designs. A knee-length layered
floral, painted skirt teamed with a tight knit-wear shirt is the
most fascinating item.
Knit-wear gives a special touch to the collections. The large
variety of knit-wear includes T-shirts, trousers, blazers,
sweaters and cardigans in white, black and beige.
Simple, classic styles is another important trend for this
year's summer assembly. Barclay presents wider and looser pajama
trousers mixed with unstructured jackets. The predominant colors
of Barclay's classic pieces are white and beige. The fabrics used
for this style are mostly georgette, semi-transparent chiffons
and all variants of crepe. Her classic line emphasize clarity,
simplicity and neutrality.
Barclay also revealed men's outfits consisting of various
pants, blazers, T-shirts, jackets and short pants.
Business outfits
Although Barclay's collections are mainly intended for young
people, their classic items are also suitable as business and
office outfits. Her beige blazers paired with gray blouses and
mini skirts create a smart business look. Another attractive
business ensemble is a pipe trouser worn with a long white blouse
and a dark blue vest and a long blue jacket.
Betty Barclay collections have been on the market in the
United States since the 1940s, and were very popular with young
American girls of that period.
Focusing on a young clientele, Betty Barclay collections
included trendy dresses, blouses, skirts, trousers, jackets,
trouser suits and lady suits. Early in the l950s, Betty Barclay
penetrated the European market including the most potential
German market.
Under a special licensing agreement, a German garment
manufacturer, Max Berk, was authorized to produce Barclay's
collections for the European market. Today, Barclay's collection
overseas countries are designed in Germany.
In Indonesia, Betty Barclay's collections are available at
Plaza Indonesia and Blok M Plaza in Jakarta and Tunjungan Plaza
in Surabaya.
You will be set back at least a hundred thousand rupiah for a
Barclay's skirt, a tartan blazer may cost Rp 600,000, and a short
flowery dress goes for between Rp 300,000 and Rp 600,000.
