Barcelona Confirm Frenkie de Jong Will Be Out for Six Weeks
Bad news has befallen the Catalan club, Barcelona. Their key midfielder, Frenkie de Jong, is confirmed to be out of action for approximately six weeks due to a hamstring injury.
According to an official statement from the La Liga club on Thursday (February 26th), the injury occurred during a routine training session on Thursday (February 26th) morning local time.
The absence of the Dutch international player is a major blow for Barcelona, given his vital role in the team’s midfield this season.
De Jong’s absence comes at the worst possible time. Barcelona is preparing for a crucial second leg of the 2025/2026 Copa del Rey semi-final against Atletico Madrid.
The crucial match is scheduled to take place at the Camp Nou stadium on Wednesday (March 4th) early morning WIB.
Barcelona’s task in the match is considered a near-impossible mission. After suffering a heavy 0-4 defeat in the first leg in Madrid, they now need to win by at least five goals to turn the situation around and advance to the final.
Without De Jong as the midfield orchestrator, the burden of creativity in the midfield now falls on his teammates.
Throughout the 2025/2026 season, De Jong has shown remarkable consistency, making 31 appearances in all competitions. He has contributed with one goal and seven assists.
His only goal this season came when Barcelona thrashed Levante 3-0 in La Liga on Sunday (February 22nd).
Historically, De Jong has been an irreplaceable pillar since joining from Ajax Amsterdam in July 2019. To date, he has made 290 appearances for Blaugrana.
That number is only two matches away from the record of another Dutch legend, Philip Cocu, who has 292 appearances for Barcelona.
During his time at Camp Nou, the 28-year-old player has contributed 20 goals and 30 assists. He has also been an important part of the club’s success in winning seven prestigious trophies, including two Spanish League titles (2022/2023, 2024/2025), two Copa del Rey trophies (2020/2021, 2024/2025), and three Spanish Super Cup titles (2023, 2025, 2026).
Now, Barcelona’s medical staff will work hard to recover De Jong’s condition so that he can return to strengthen the team in the remainder of this season. (Ant/Z-1)
