Barantin: Livestock from Australia enters via Juanda in healthy condition
Sidoarjo, East Java (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) has assured that imported livestock from Australia entering Indonesia via Juanda International Airport in Sidoarjo, East Java, are in healthy condition. “All examination stages are conducted comprehensively to ensure the entering animals are healthy and free from Quarantine Animal Pest Diseases (HPHK),” said Deputy for Animal Quarantine at Barantin, Sriyanto, in Sidoarjo on Wednesday. According to him, this has been ensured through comprehensive supervision of every stage of livestock importation, from physical checks to laboratory tests, to confirm the animals’ health before distribution. He explained that the hundreds of imported livestock that arrived via cargo flight at Juanda International Airport on Monday, 30 March 2026, consisted of 23 dairy cows, 35 camels, and 145 sheep of Texel, Suffolk, and Dorper breeds. Sriyanto stated that all the livestock were then transported to the Animal Quarantine Installation (IKH) owned by the East Java Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Agency in Surabaya to undergo a quarantine period of approximately 14 days. During that period, he continued, the East Java Quarantine Agency conducts strict health checks and supervision to ensure all livestock are free from contagious animal diseases such as brucellosis, paratuberculosis (Para TB), enzootic bovine leucosis (EBL), bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD), and lumpy skin disease (LSD). “We ensure that every imported animal has undergone strict supervision, so that its derivative products can contribute to meeting the nutritional needs of the community in a safe and sustainable manner,” he said. He assessed that the presence of imported livestock, particularly dairy cows, is expected to increase national milk production to strengthen the availability of animal protein for the community and support the government in the smooth implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals Programme (MBG).
