Bara win but six others crash out

Bara Gomies registered a convincing win for a place in the semifinals in the President's Cup, but overall it was a grim day for the hosts, who saw their remaining six boxers shut out of the competition here on Tuesday.

Bara dominated Tomori Kikuchi of Japan to scrape to a 29-8 win in the 75-kilogram fight at the Tumenggung Jamal Sports Hall.

But Indonesia's six other boxers fought to no avail.

Atris Neolaka (51kg) and Darman Hutahuruk (64kg) lost to Kazakhstan's Jhusupov Zhamil and Vitaly Demsnenko respectively. David Isikiwar (51kg) went down to Korean Kim Ji-wan and Abdul Razak (75kg) to Kim Jae-ki, also from Korea.

Erico Amanupunyo (64kg) was beaten by Asghar Ali Shah of Pakistan, while Edy Heryanto (75kg) was knocked out of the competition by Moh. Khairul of Malaysia.

South Korean Lee Ok-sung also made it through to the semifinals, as did Liu Shih Tung of Chinese Taipei.

The Korean fighters look to be tough opponents to beat for the Indonesians in the semifinal matches on Wednesday.

Destesa Moniaga, the winner of this year's National Games in Palembang, South Sumatra, may be Indonesia's best hope among the seven in contention. He will take on Hong Moo-won in the 48kg division match.

"I would rate Destesa's chance of reaching the final as 50-50. Hong is definitely Korea's toughest fighter," Destesa's coach and father Fery Moniaga said.
