Bappisus Chief: Fugitive Oil Tycoon Riza Chalid Remains a 'Homework' for Indonesia

The head of the Development Control and Special Investigation Agency (Bappisus), Aris Marsudiyanto, has stated that the hunt for fugitive oil tycoon Muhammad Riza Chalid remains a significant task for the government. He noted that the suspect, who is already on an Interpol Red Notice, is still at large.

“Currently, we still have homework to capture and hunt down one of the major corruptors, Muhammad Riza Chalid, who has been issued a red notice,” Aris told reporters after a discussion in Ancol, North Jakarta, on Monday (10/8/2026).

Aris expressed hope that the search and arrest efforts would soon yield results. He confirmed that law enforcement agencies are collaborating both nationally and internationally to track down Riza. “Hopefully, our work, which has been synergised with all law enforcement agencies both domestically and internationally, will bear fruit as we hope,” he said.

Aris further clarified that Bappisus is not involved in the legal proceedings against Riza Chalid and will not intervene in the enforcement process handled by the relevant authorities. “Bappisus leaves all legal material processes to law enforcement officials. There is no intervention whatsoever regarding the substance of law enforcement,” he added.

Previously, the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) named Riza Chalid a suspect in a corruption case related to the procurement of crude oil by Petral between 2008 and 2015. He had already been named a suspect in a separate case concerning crude oil governance that allegedly caused state losses amounting to Rp 285 trillion. Riza is also a suspect in a money laundering (TPPU) case and has been placed on the wanted list (DPO). The National Police’s International Relations Division confirmed that Riza has been placed on Interpol’s Red Notice list. “We continue to cooperate with Interpol, especially Interpol Indonesia, in an effort to bring in Mr. MRC,” said the Director of Investigation at the Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes, Syarief Sulaeman Nahdi, during a press conference in South Jakarta on Thursday (9/4).
