The Minister of National Development Planning/Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Rachmat Pambudy, has set a target for the Green Indonesia Future Initiative (GIFT) to attract green investments worth US$2 billion by 2030. He stated that the launch of this collaborative initiative between Bappenas and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) aims to support the green economy, green jobs, and environmentally-based development in Indonesia.

“The current changing climate will require a new development model, where green development cannot be overlooked,” said Rachmat Pamesudy during the inauguration of the Green Indonesia Future Initiative in Jakarta on Thursday.

The GIFT initiative represents the fourth stage in a series of collaborations between Bappenas and GGGI. The first phase of collaboration between the two institutions took place from 2013 to 2015, focusing on integrating green growth through GGGI grants. The subsequent phase was implemented from 2016 to 2020 to encourage green investment in the energy, land, and forest sectors, as well as Special Economic Zones (SEZ), through technical support and the mainstreaming of renewable energy use. The third phase ran from 2021 to 2025 to strengthen policies, access to funding, and national capacity, while promoting green growth ambitions through investments in renewable energy, green cities, SEZs, sustainable landscapes, and green finance.

Meanwhile, the GIFT initiative is being implemented based on the GGGI Indonesia Country Planning Framework (CPF) 2026-2030, focusing on green investment, climate action, carbon pricing, sustainable forestry, blue and coastal economies, sustainable energy, sustainable mobility, and green buildings and industries. Rachmat noted that the GIFT programme shifts the direction of the Bappenas and GGGI cooperation from a consolidation stage towards accelerating development impact. The investment target of US$2 billion is equivalent to double the total investment achievement from all previous collaboration phases.

To achieve this target, the ministry will align Indonesia’s national development needs with financing dynamics and regional priorities through a demand-driven approach and long-term partnerships. The initiative is also designed to strengthen Indonesia’s position as a hub for green development cooperation in the Southeast Asian region and to serve as a learning space for other developing nations. “GIFT will serve as a dynamic bridge that transforms vision into implementation and aligns national interests with global green investment opportunities,” said Rachmat.
