Bappenas Strengthens Biodiversity Data for Evidence-Based Policy

The Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) is strengthening the provision of scientific data and information on biodiversity as a basis for evidence-based policy formulation and development planning. This effort is carried out in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Ministry of Environment, GIZ Indonesia and ASEAN, and the Indonesian Conservation Foundation through the preparation of four documents on the Status of Biodiversity for the regions of Bali–Nusa Tenggara, Java, Maluku, and Papua. These documents serve as supporting documents for the Indonesian Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (IBSAP) 2025–2045, presenting the latest scientific portrait of the characteristics, potential, conditions, and challenges of biodiversity management by documenting the wealth of ecosystems, species, and genetics in each region. The government has prioritised biodiversity management at the ecosystem, species, and genetic levels in the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) through the Green Economy pillar. The launch of these documents is considered increasingly important as Indonesia is one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity wealth in the world, home to more than 1.5 million species with over 30 percent being endemic. Officials stated that up-to-date scientific data is a crucial foundation for ensuring this natural heritage is managed sustainably and continues to serve as national development capital. The official launch of the documents is scheduled for 21 July 2026, aiming to strengthen shared commitment to preserving Indonesia’s biodiversity wealth and promoting its sustainable use for public welfare.
