Economic transformation must ultimately be reflected in the transformation of the production structure and the national export structure.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of National Development Planning and Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Febrian Alphyanto Ruddyard, stated that economic transformation must be reflected in production and export structure.

“Economic transformation must ultimately be reflected in the transformation of the production structure and the national export structure,” he said at the Launch of Indonesia’s Export Potential Dashboard in Jakarta on Monday.

He noted that Indonesia’s exports are dominated by commodities and labour-intensive products, requiring a shift towards more complex and high-tech products.

Despite two decades of export growth, competitiveness and complexity have not kept pace.

Of 5,199 export products, only around 1,041 are competitive globally, with the export structure still dominated by commodities and labour-intensive goods.

Therefore, targeted policies are needed to promote high-complexity products as new drivers of Indonesia’s export growth.

“This shows our homework is still substantial, so we must continue strengthening manufacturing and deeper downstream industries. It is here that value is added, productivity grows, and a nation’s long-term competitiveness is built,” said the Deputy Minister.

He added that Indonesia, with its abundant natural resources, has the potential to transform these into value-added industries, innovation, and ultimately globally competitive products.

“I am not just talking about what we export, but we must look more broadly at our position in global trade,” said Febrian.
