Bappenas Chief: Social Life Cycle Assessment Can Translate SDG Commitments into Measurable Impact
Indonesia has achieved more than 62 percent of its SDG targets. Minister of National Development Planning/Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Rachmat Pambudy stated that Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) can help translate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) commitments into measurable impacts. S-LCA is an analytical method for measuring the social and socio-economic impacts of a product, service, or process throughout its life cycle. “We need to integrate S-LCA into all SDG indicators that are lagging behind, so it can be used to anticipate social risks, direct implementation, and maximise the impact of every development investment,” he said at the 10th International Conference of Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA 2026) held at the Japfa The Learning Centre (JTLC) in Bogor, West Java, according to an official statement in Jakarta on Tuesday. Rachmat Pambudy conveyed that Indonesia is accelerating the achievement of the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision through the 2025-2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), focusing on strengthening food and energy resilience, accelerating industrial downstreaming, improving human resource quality, and poverty alleviation. He further stated that Indonesia has achieved more than 62 percent of its SDG targets. However, around 24 percent of the remaining targets, particularly in the social and governance pillars, still require serious attention ahead of 2030. Therefore, he said, the application of S-LCA needs to be expanded to help anticipate social risks, strengthen programme implementation, and maximise development impact for all communities without exception. This approach is considered helpful in placing people at the centre of decision-making while ensuring that the development transformation process does not leave behind vulnerable groups and can reach all levels of society. “This is in line with the principle of no one left behind as the foundation for achieving the SDGs to realise inclusive and sustainable development,” said the Bappenas Head. The forum, themed “Unity in Diversity”, was held for the first time in the Asia Pacific since 2010 by Life Cycle Indonesia (LCI) in collaboration with JAPFA and was attended by 430 participants from 35 countries with 169 scientific contributions.
