The Indonesian government is targeting the mobilisation of US$2 billion in green investments by 2030 through the Green Indonesia Future Initiative (GIFT) 2026–2030 programme to support the acceleration of green economic growth in Indonesia. The programme, implemented through a partnership between the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), is scheduled for launch on 4 June 2026. The targeted investment value is approximately double the total green investment mobilised during the previous phase of the partnership.

Nizhar Marizi, Director of Environment at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, stated that the government’s cooperation with GGGI has spanned 12 years and has contributed to various national development agendas. “The cooperation established with GGGI over the past 12 years has consistently contributed to our national development goals. To this end, GGGI works alongside ministries, provincial governments, and financial institutions to design conditions that support investment and encourage systemic change,” Nizhar said in Jakarta on Tuesday (2/6/2026).

Bappenas noted that various policy interventions and investment flows developed through this partnership are estimated to have supported an emission reduction of 183.54 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent and created 271,095 green jobs. Furthermore, the partnership has mobilised approximately US$776.5 million in green investments across various sectors, ranging from energy and urban development to social forestry and the blue economy.

Through GIFT 2026–2030, the government aims to increase the role of non-budgetary investment in supporting the sustainable development agenda, including through private sector involvement and various innovative financing schemes.

Leonardo A.A. Teguh Sambodo, Deputy for Food, Natural Resources, and Environment at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, stated that the green investment target is part of the effort to accelerate the implementation of a green economy in national development. “The name GIFT itself reflects our commitment that the development interventions we undertake today are not only for present interests but also for the future and generations to come. Having integrated green economy principles into our development plans, the challenge lies in how to realise them. Green economic transformation is not an option, but a necessity to ensure Indonesia’s development can continue to grow while maintaining environmental sustainability and public welfare,” he said.

According to Bappenas, GIFT is built upon over a decade of cooperative experience, covering the development of green financing models, support for policy implementation at central and regional levels, and opening access to international funding sources.

GGGI Indonesia Country Representative Rowan Fraser stated that this new phase of cooperation is also directed towards expanding access to finance for green projects deemed economically viable. “Through GIFT 2006–2030, we are entering a phase built upon the foundations we have laid. GIFT aims to present opportunities to increase Indonesia’s climate ambition while minimising investment risks and expanding access to finance for green initiatives that are bankable and high-impact,” said Rowan.
