Bapeten confirms NTT earthquake did not trigger rise in radiation exposure

The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten) has confirmed that the earthquake which struck several districts and cities in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and surrounding areas recently did not trigger an increase in radiation exposure at the affected locations.

“Based on the results of coordination carried out by Bapeten with relevant stakeholders, no impact of the NTT earthquake was found on the safety and security of ionising radiation sources in the region, and there was no increase in radiation exposure in the NTT area as a result of the earthquake,” said Head of the Legal, Cooperation and Public Communication Bureau of Bapeten RI, Ishak, in an official statement in Jakarta on Monday.

Ishak said there are 51 facilities that utilise nuclear energy in the form of ionising radiation, both for health and industrial purposes.

In addition, there are 14 facilities utilising ionising radiation located in 8 districts affected by the earthquake, including Ngada, Manggarai, Nagekeo, Sikka, West Manggarai, Ende, Alor and East Flores districts.

Bapeten expressed its concern and condolences over the loss of life in the incident, and also paid attention to facilities that utilise ionising radiation sources in hospitals and industries in the affected areas.

Ishak appealed to the public or stakeholders who have information regarding the safety and security of ionising radiation sources in earthquake-affected areas to contact Bapeten through Bapeten’s official social media channels, or by email at info@Bapeten.go.id.

“Any information submitted will be very helpful in maintaining the security and safety of the community, workers and the environment. Hopefully this disaster can be handled well soon and our brothers and sisters in NTT can resume their activities as before,” said Ishak.

Bapeten will continue to closely monitor conditions on the ground, especially in relation to aftershocks.
