Bapanas Says Egg Prices Recovering After Recent Slump
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Food Agency (Bapanas) has stated that broiler egg prices are beginning to recover after having slumped due to weakened demand in recent weeks.
Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilisation at Bapanas, I Gusti Ketut Astawa, said the price recovery was driven by the resumption of egg absorption by the National Nutrition Fulfilment Service (SPPG) for the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme, the end of the month of Suro, and the start of the new school term.
“Egg prices are rising, thank God, because previously the price at the farm gate had fallen to Rp15,000,” Ketut said during a visit to Tebet Timur Market in Jakarta on Monday.
However, with the end of the month of Suro (Muharram), the resumption of teaching and learning activities, and the restart of SPPG operations, Ketut noted that demand for eggs has begun to increase, leading to a gradual price recovery.
“This is very timely with the start of SPPG, the passing of the month of Suro, children returning to school, and prices are linearly starting to rise,” he said.
Ketut stated that the price of eggs at the farm level has now moved up to a range of Rp22,000 to Rp23,000 per kilogram, although it is still below the ideal level of around Rp24,000 to Rp25,000 per kilogram.
Meanwhile, based on data from the National Strategic Food Price Information Centre (PIHPS) managed by Bank Indonesia, the national average price of broiler eggs at the producer level was recorded at Rp25,150 per kilogram on 20 July 2026.
He assessed that the price increase needs to be maintained so that it remains at a reasonable level, ensuring profitability for farmers without burdening consumers.
“We must not let our farmers’ prices fall too low. If that happens, they will stop producing, and we will end up importing again,” he said.
Ketut acknowledged that the recovery in egg prices could potentially drive food inflation. However, he believes the situation remains within the government’s expected corridor as long as prices move around the reference price.
“The government is maintaining the rhythm. As long as it stays around the reference price, it is still good,” he said.
Based on data from the National Strategic Food Price Information Centre (PIHPS) managed by Bank Indonesia, the national average price of broiler eggs in traditional markets was recorded at Rp29,250 per kilogram on 6 July 2026, then fell to Rp29,000 per kilogram on 14 July, before rising to Rp31,300 per kilogram on 20 July 2026.
