The Banyuwangi Regency government is waiving levies on thousands of people’s market traders scattered across all regional markets every weekend, namely Saturday and Sunday. The fees, normally collected daily by officials, are now eliminated for those two days as a form of support for the traders.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani stated that this policy was implemented to help ease the burden on traditional market traders. “Therefore, the regency government has issued a policy that all market traders are exempt from fees every Saturday and Sunday. This is to reduce the burden on people’s market traders,” she said during the programme socialisation at Srono Market on Sunday, 3 May 2026.

Ipuk explained that the fee exemption, which covers stall and kiosk rentals, applies to more than 6,500 traders spread across 20 regional markets.

The policy has been enshrined in the Banyuwangi Regency Regent’s Regulation on the Exemption of Regional Market Service Fees in 2026.

“Hopefully, with this relaxation for traders, economic activities in people’s markets will continue to thrive, which will in turn drive the regional economy,” she hoped.

The policy has been well-received by the traders. Suwarso, a 60-year-old vegetable trader, said he is greatly helped by the fee exemption.

In a day, he earns a profit of around Rp70,000 to Rp100,000. “Praise be to God, it can reduce expenses, especially now that the price of kresek (plastic bags) has also risen; I still have to buy petrol for my motorbike. This is a great relief,” he said.

Kusmini, a fruit trader, expressed similar sentiments, feeling benefited by the policy, especially on weekends when the number of buyers increases. “Praise be to God if on Saturdays and Sundays we don’t have to pay fees. Moreover, Saturdays and Sundays are when the market usually has many buyers,” she said.

Meanwhile, Banyuwangi Regency’s Assistant for General Administration, Budi Santoso, stated that the value of the relaxation from this policy is estimated to reach around Rp3.2 billion per year from the total potential regional market fees, which previously ranged from Rp9 billion.

The regency government also ensures there will be no fee tariff increases for traders, as regulated in Regional Regulation Number 3 of 2025 on Regional Taxes and Levies. Budi explained that the fee tariffs are divided into three classes. For shop, kiosk, and meat or fish stall facilities, the daily class 1 tariff is Rp900, class 2 Rp700, and class 3 Rp500.

Stall usage is charged Rp700 for class 1, Rp500 for class 2, and Rp400 for class 3, while the yard is Rp600, Rp400, and Rp300 respectively. Meanwhile, livestock market fees are Rp7,000 for large livestock such as cattle, buffalo, and horses, and Rp3,500 for small livestock.

In addition, outward-facing shop tariffs are set at Rp1,200 for class 1, Rp900 for class 2, and Rp700 for class 3. As for inward-facing shops, they are charged Rp1,100 for class 1, Rp800 for class 2, and Rp700 for class 3. With this policy, it is hoped that traders will be further assisted and market economic activities will remain maintained.
