Banyuwangi – The Government of Banyuwangi Regency in East Java, through its Banyuwangi Hijau (Green Banyuwangi) programme, is collaborating with Austrian corporation Borealis via Project STOP to construct a waste processing and recycling facility (TPS3R) with a capacity of 160 tonnes per day.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani stated that construction of the waste treatment facility in Karetan Village, Purwoharjo District, has reached 40.95 per cent progress and is targeted to commence operations in September 2026.

“Construction progress has reached 40.95 per cent and will continue to be accelerated, with the target of becoming operational by September,” Ipuk said in Banyuwangi on Tuesday.

He explained that development of the facility represents an effort to manage waste, particularly plastic, through sorting and subsequent processing.

According to him, the waste treatment facility has the capacity to process up to 160 tonnes of waste per day, or is estimated to be capable of processing waste generated by a population of 362,000 residents, equivalent to 100,000 households daily.

“The presence of this facility can serve as a solution to waste management problems, whilst simultaneously acting as an economic stimulus for residents in the surrounding area. With substantial capacity, this facility will absorb considerable labour and enable local residents to benefit,” Ipuk stated.

The Karetan TPS3R will be equipped with various facilities to facilitate the sorting process for recyclable waste, organic waste, and residue that will be handled further outside the TPS3R location.
