Banyumas Religious Affairs Ministry and AIDS Commission Educate Madrasah Students on HIV/AIDS Dangers

The Office of the Religious Affairs Ministry (Kemenag) in Banyumas Regency has taken a preventive step to protect the younger generation within the Islamic education environment. Through a strategic collaboration with the Banyumas Regency AIDS Commission (KPA), Kemenag organised socialisation and education on the dangers of HIV/AIDS for students and teaching staff at madrasahs. This measure was taken as an effort to strengthen the madrasah ‘fortress’ against the threats of promiscuity and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, which are increasingly alarming among teenagers. The education is expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of transmission methods, prevention, and the elimination of stigma against People with HIV/AIDS (ODHA). The Head of the Banyumas Kemenag Office emphasised that madrasahs are not only places to gain religious and general knowledge but must also be safe and healthy environments. According to him, understanding reproductive health and the dangers of HIV/AIDS is crucial to provide from an early age so that students have the awareness to protect themselves. “We want to ensure that madrasah students have immunity, both in faith and medical knowledge, against the threat of HIV/AIDS. This cooperation with the KPA is a tangible form of the state’s presence in protecting our children’s future,” he said. The Banyumas Regency KPA welcomed this initiative. During the education session, a team of experts from the KPA presented the latest data on the distribution of cases in the Banyumas area and the dominant risk factors. The KPA stressed that education in schools and madrasahs is the main key to breaking the chain of transmission. In addition to health aspects, this collaboration also targets social aspects. Students are taught not to shun or discriminate against HIV/AIDS sufferers. The humanitarian values and empathy taught in madrasahs are expected to become a foundation for students in addressing this social issue wisely. With the synergy between Kemenag and the KPA, it is hoped that all madrasahs in Banyumas Regency can become institutions free from drugs and HIV/AIDS, while producing a generation that is intellectually smart and physically healthy.
