Banyumas Department of Agriculture Intensifies Vaccination of 22,000 Cattle Ahead of Eid al-Adha

Dinpertan Banyumas is accelerating vaccination of livestock, particularly cattle, ahead of Eid al-Adha. The head of Banyumas Dinpertan, Arif Sukmo Buwono, said this year Banyumas has been allocated 22,000 doses of vaccine. Of this total, 11,000 doses are targeted to be distributed to livestock in the area by the end of May 2026. ‘Vaccination is conducted to strengthen the animals’ immune systems and to prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and to guard against liver fluke,’ Arif said on Tuesday, 19 May 2026. According to data from the Livestock Health Center’s unit (UPTD Pusat Kesehatan Hewan), the cattle population in Banyumas in 2025 rose by 3 percent, reaching 13,750 head, up from 13,150 the previous year. Although the population has recovered after a decline in 2022, the head of the Puskeswan unit, Mohammad Arif Hidayat, noted that the number of cattle needed for Eid al-Adha, about 6,000 head, cannot yet be fully met by local farmers. ‘Many local cattle remain breeding stock and calves not yet fit for slaughter. Therefore, Banyumas still imports cattle from outside the region to meet market demand,’ Hidayat said. To anticipate diseases entering from outside the area, Dinpertan has implemented strict livestock movement surveillance protocols. Cattle imported from outside the region are not allowed to enter the animal market directly. ‘Cattle from outside the region must first be rested in temporary holding pens. During this resting period, staff will monitor their health intensively before they are deemed safe for sale to the public,’ he concluded.
