A car and garage belonging to a resident of Gluntung Lor, Caturharjo, Pandak, Bantul were engulfed in flames. The fire broke out after the owner charged the battery using a charger and, when starting the vehicle, flames emerged from the carburetor, spreading to destroy the car.

Bantul Police Regional Public Relations Chief Iptu Rita Hidayanto stated the incident began when the homeowner, AS (36), was charging the car battery using a charger in his garage around 10:00 WIB. AS then attempted to start the vehicle.

‘After starting the vehicle, flames suddenly erupted from the carburetor,’ he told reporters on Wednesday (27 May 2026).

Upon noticing flames from the carburetor, AS tried to extinguish the fire by covering it with a wet towel, but his efforts proved unsuccessful.

‘The fire intensified and spread, engulfing the entire car and the garage,’ he added.

AS then shouted for help, and locals rushed to assist in putting out the fire. However, the flames persisted, prompting residents to contact the fire brigade.

Upon arrival, firefighters immediately began extinguishing the flames, which were soon brought under control,’ he said.

As a result of the fire, AS suffered losses including the complete destruction of the car and the garage roof. Iptu Rita confirmed there were no casualties or injuries.

The fire was caused by fuel spilling from the carburetor and soaking other parts. When starting the vehicle, a spark from the charged battery ignited the spilled fuel,’ he explained.
